Learning outcomes
Module 1 – What is Quality Use of Medicines all about?
This module will introduce you to the principles of Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) and specific medicines-related issues for a number of health professions.
After completing this module you should be able to:
- explain the benefits and risks of medicine use
- list the objectives of the National Medicines Policy
- describe the key components of quality use of medicines (QUM)
- describe key considerations for selecting appropriate medicines
- identify the roles different health professionals play in QUM and medicine management.
Module 2 – Giorgio's case
This module examines the use of medicines in the complex case of Giorgio Mattiou. Giorgio has a number of health problems, which have recently been compounded by a hospital admission for a moderate stroke.
After completing this module you should:
- be aware of ways to optimise the use of medicines with respect to suitable dosage, timing and delivery of drugs
- have an understanding of the role the health professional team has in supporting the Quality Use of Medicines (QUM)
- be aware of possible alternatives to the use of medicines for symptom management
- be able to implement strategies that promote Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) such as patient education and accurate diagnosis of conditions
