General course learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- obtain a thorough medical and medication history
- engage the patient in a discussion about their health
- prioritise management in partnership with the patient
- order and interpret appropriate tests and investigations to guide decisions regarding treatment
- recommend appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies
- optimise timing and administration of medicines
- monitor patient response to therapy
- provide appropriate medicines information to patients, families and carers
- write appropriate prescriptions that meet safe prescribing practices and legal requirements
- access current information about PBS requirements and restrictions.
Specific course learning outcomes
Patient 1: Belinda
These course objectives will be explored through the patient Belinda, a 22 year old with schizophrenia and lifestyle issues.
Weight management and diabetes monitoring
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- assess and monitor diabetes risk for patients on antipsychotic therapy
- consider alternative pharmacological therapies in response to unwanted adverse effects from treatment.
Schizophrenia relapse prevention
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- develop a schizophrenia relapse prevention plan
- consider different techniques to improve medicines adherence and concordance in specific patient groups.
Sexual health and complementary medicines
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- recommend appropriate preventative and protective measures.
Binge drinking and illicit drug use
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- discuss the risks of binge drinking and illicit drug use
- assist the patient in changing behaviour relating to binge drinking and illicit drug use in order to reduce health risks.
Patient 2: Benji & Belinda
The course objectives will be explored through the patient Benji, a 3-year-old boy, and his mother Bridgit.
Asthma – part 1
Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to:
- Assess severity and initiate appropriate therapy for an acute asthma exacerbation.
- Recommend appropriate preventative asthma therapy.
Asthma – part 2
Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to:
- Educate the patient/carer on appropriate asthma management and appropriate use and care of asthma devices.
Immunisation
Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to:
- Identify a child’s immunisation requirements.
- Implement an immunisation catch-up schedule, where needed.
Smoking cessation
Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to:
- Implement the 5As of smoking cessation
- Recommend appropriate therapy for smoking cessation.
Patient 3: Bill
These course learning objectives will be explored through the patient Bill, a 55 year old man with type 2 diabetes. The patient journey continues over 6 years.
Diabetes management
Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to:
- educate the patient on self-management of type 2 diabetes
- assess and monitor the patient’s self-management of type 2 diabetes
- review the patient’s type 2 diabetes treatment
Diabetes again
Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to:
- assess need for and manage transition to insulin therapy in a patient with type 2 diabetes.
The diabetic foot
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- recommend appropriate non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies for managing diabetes complications in the feet.
- educate the patient on prevention and management of diabetes complications in the feet.
Renal impairment
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- assess and adjust pharmacological therapy in the presence of acute kidney injury
- report an adverse drug reaction.
